West Midlands 5G (WM5G)

Having set up the UK’s first multi-city 5G testbed, delivering over £200m GVA in benefits for the West Midlands and consolidating the region’s position as the UK’s best region for 5G coverage, WM5G continues to lead the way, helping ambitious companies scale their technologies to even greater heights. As well as helping your businesses innovate exciting new products and services with 5G, the company also has expertise in artificial intelligence, connectivity solutions and Internet of Things (IoT).

To date, over 500 organisations have been supported in their aim to develop and test next-generation products, ranging across multiple industries including CreaTech, healthcare, manufacturing and transportation.

University of Birmingham – Antennas & Applied Electromagnetics Laboratory (AAEL)

With its pioneering research laboratory within one of the UK’s largest and most dynamic research groups specialising in Radio Frequency and Microwave engineering, the University of Birmingham has a prestigious history in the fields of radar, sonar and microwave communications.

Ambitious companies developing exciting new technologies can collaborate with the Antennas & Applied Electromagnetics Laboratory on cutting-edge research projects. A previous example includes assessing Terahertz Technology for Future Road Vehicles. New intelligent vehicle sensor systems using this technology could potentially control vehicle response to hazardous situations, enhancing passenger safety.

University of Birmingham.

The UK National Telecommunications Lab

The UK National Telecommunications Lab will be built in Solihull in the West Midlands. The £80m, state-of-the-art facility will further enhance R&D opportunities for companies in the region, bringing together academics, private firms and telecoms operators to innovate exciting new technologies within telecoms and cyber security.

The laboratory will attract international firms, as they’ll be able to collaborate with leading industry experts in developing, testing and scaling next-generation products and services. It will make entering the UK market easier by testing equipment and products for interoperability. The facility will be positioned as a focal point of the UK Government’s £250m strategy to diversify the UK 5G market.

Aston University – Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT)

Aston University offers private-sector companies access to one of the world’s leading photonics research centres, with the Institute of Photonic Technologies possessing a network of over 100 industrial collaborators, ranging from SMEs to major corporations including Airbus, IBM and Thales.

The Institute has pioneered major breakthroughs across a broad portfolio of sectors including medical lasers and bio-sensing for healthcare, high-speed optical communications technologies and cutting-edge material processing.

Birmingham City University – Intelligent Systems and Networks Group

Birmingham City University’s Intelligent Systems and Networks Group offers state-of-the-art research facilities and world-class expertise from the worlds of cybersecurity and telecoms. The university has a proven record in cutting-edge research across digital infrastructures, networking technologies and network analysis.
