Home of the Low Carbon, Green Industrial Revolution.

Opportunities to turn new technologies into commercially viable energy solutions begin here. The West Midlands has risen to the challenge of decarbonisation and utilised the region’s rich history of manufacturing to allow the Low Carbon sector to develop swiftly into a whole systems approach across the area.

The region harbors the most significant concentration of energy experts across the UK, providing compelling insight and expertise that realise innovative visions. Local centres of excellence, including the Battery Industrialisation Centre and the UK’s only Energy Innovation Zones, also ensure local organisations are empowered to create low carbon solutions in the region, and shape the future.

Leading the charge in battery technology

The West Midlands is the place for forward thinking businesses to test and scale next generation battery production, being home to the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC). The centre is Britain’s leading location for testing with adaptable facilities that can run multiple projects simultaneously in a cutting-edge environment, all whilst promoting industry collaboration that drives innovation.

A landmark Joint Venture Partnership with bold ambitions to build a Gigafactory in Coventry is also just over the horizon for the West Midlands, and organisations orienteered around the area will soon have access to incomparable battery manufacturing potential directly on their doorstep.

Energy Innovation Zones

The region’s Energy Innovation Zones are entire geographical areas dedicated to finding energy solutions that will help cut carbon to zero. Companies operating within these areas receive assistance from local authorities removing market obstacles and accelerating innovations, allowing them to swiftly deploy clean energy solutions at scale. Speak to our industry expert to find out how your low-carbon energy company can get involved.

Collaboration in low-carbon energy centres

Tyseley Energy Park (TEP) is a hotspot of innovations working to develop solutions to the climate crisis, and fast track shared industry goals for reducing emissions. It’s also only one organisation in a network of collaborating centres, academics, and industry partners working on zero carbon emissions.

For example, the Birmingham Energy Institute, part of the University of Birmingham, works in collaboration with industry partners, focusing on empowering the region on a world stage through hydrogen fuel cells, alongside battery and energy recycling.

TEP is at the heart of promoting the region’s low carbon and renewable energy economy, incubating SMEs through two core programmes; the Climate Innovation Platform programme and the Energy Transition Centre programme
