The digital infrastructure of the West Midlands is ready for the next generation of digital innovation. Our 5G multi-city testbed means that we are well-placed to support future innovations in line with the UK digital strategy.

Whether you can provide cyber security for the likes of our big infrastructure companies like Severn Trent and E.ON, or have the next great VR game to develop at the UK’s hub of gaming – Silicon Spa – you have a place in the West Midlands.

VR, video games and serious games

Video games make up an important part of our local tech economy. The West Midlands provides 25% of the UK’s gaming output, much of which comes from Leamington Spa game studios. UK-based gaming companies have enjoyed a boost in recognition following the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which saw esports included in the roster for the first time.

Alongside the rise of British esports, we have a booming serious gaming sector. Coventry University’s Serious Games Institute is using computer simulations, modelling and interactive digital media to support non-leisure-based. This includes working with healthcare professionals across Europe to develop software for medical devices.
