5G in the West Midlands
West Midlands 5G (WM5G) is accelerating digital transformation and delivering tangible benefits to businesses throughout the region. Through a multi-million-pound programme in March 2019, WM5G set up the UK’s first region-wide, multi-city 5G testbed.
Today, multiple ongoing projects are working to advance innovation across the region, specifically focused on manufacturing, transport, and health care.
The UK’s largest 5G testbed
The West Midlands is already home to the UK’s most entrepreneurial city, and domestic and foreign businesses are capitalising on the unique opportunity to test, prove and scale up new 5G products and services. We are the UK’s best region for 5G coverage with a greater capacity to handle next-generation innovations
This innovative activity has strengthened the West Midlands’ position as the UK’s 5G ecosystem hub, delivering wide-reaching positive outcomes and proven case studies that can now be accelerated across the West Midlands and beyond.
Manufacturing digitalisation and true productivity
Streamlining production processes, reducing waste and quickly delivering better quality products are just some of the benefits businesses have gained from 5G innovation in the West Midlands. Here, manufacturers can access support to enable improvements with technology that ultimately give you a competitive edge.

Enhancing the connectivity of transport systems
Solutions to transport issues such as traffic congestion, navigating the changing post-covid environment and making transport more attractive and accessible are some of the key benefits businesses have already gained from transport related 5G innovation in the region.
Through its low latency, high capacity and reliability, 5G technology can deliver end-to-end connectivity solutions across systems and fleets, delivering live data to understand better how services are used and identify operational improvements.
A springboard for Future Mobility
For businesses looking for locations to conduct large scale CAV trials, move between digital and real world environments, or converge vehicles and infrastructure, the West Midlands offers the opportunity to do this.
Through Midlands Future Mobility, we support those in the automotive industry developing Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) solutions with the West Midlands’ Future Mobility Zone – 200+ miles of roads, 5G ready and with intelligent monitoring systems.
