Hitachi Energy officially launched its UK local HQ at an event with key local politicians, partners, customers, and universities in the Birmingham region. Hosted at its local HQ in Alpha Tower, Birmingham, the event marked six months since the business settled into the heart of Birmingham city centre.

While the new office opened its doors to staff in March, this was the first time the office welcomed key stakeholders locally and has been described as a significant investment in the region. Guests heard from Laura Fleming, Hitachi Energy’s UK Country Managing Director, about the business’ investment into the region and its focus on developing a pipeline of new workers to help attract and deliver the much-needed skills to work towards the UK’s achieving a decarbonised power sector by 2030.

Hitachi Energy, part of Hitachi Ltd., set out its commitment to the region, highlighting the need to attract local talent into the industry – with over 240 employed at the new office, the company has grown a third of its total UK workforce in just a year. In addition to moving the UK office to Birmingham, the company joined the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and is engaged with West Midlands Smart Energy Cluster as it increasingly works with local partners to advance a sustainable energy future for all.

We were delighted to welcome people to our new UK local HQ in the heart of Birmingham. Our move to Birmingham is a significant step on our growth journey in the UK and provides us with a strong base in the Midlands as we continue to drive our business and accelerate the energy transition.

The energy transition is an enormous opportunity, and our new location will help us to attract more diversity to the workforce needed to deliver a decarbonised power system. We look forward to continuing our work across the UK and attracting talented people from the area and beyond and as part of this, collaboration with local academia and business is key.

We have been warmly welcomed by the West Midlands Combined Authority and are keen to support their ambitions to nurture a Smart Energy Systems cluster in the region. We look forward to developing our relationship with the West Midlands Growth Company, who to date have helped us to settle in the ecosystem through targeted signposting and introductions.

– Laura Fleming, Country Managing Director, Hitachi Energy

Powered by the UK’s largest green talent pool and an ever-growing ecosystem of 5,100 companies, we strongly believe that the smart green power revolution starts in the West Midlands.

Hitachi Energy’s decision to make Birmingham the new location of its UK HQ reinforces the region’s potential to confidently play our part in the Government’s clean power mission and lead the UK’s smart energy transition, in line with our emerging Regional Energy Strategy and ambition for the West Midlands to be net zero by 2041.

It’s been brilliant to hear about the business’ commitment to nurturing the green energy skills of the future and I look forward to supporting their expansion plans over the coming years.

– Deputy Mayor of the West Midlands and Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, Sharon Thompson
