Talent pipeline, thriving business community, and unrivalled central location drive choice for Smiths’ new office location
An initial 50 new diverse roles created by Smiths with further growth planned
Smiths, a leading industrial engineering company, today announces the opening of a new office in Birmingham, underscoring its commitment in the UK to innovation, talent development and long-term operational resilience.
Birmingham presents a compelling opportunity: its access to a strong pipeline of talent due to the concentration of leading universities nearby, and central location provides excellent connectivity. This strategic milestone will strengthen the company’s diverse and skilled recruitment process, foster a functional centre of excellence and position Smiths strongly for future growth.
As the UK’s second-largest city, the new Birmingham hub gives the company access to a vibrant business ecosystem. The strategically selected site will initially accommodate 50 employees in cross-functional roles, with a strong focus on apprenticeships and early-careers talent. As the business scales, there is opportunity for further roles to be created.

Roles based at the new office, located in the central business district, will include HR, procurement, reward, pensions, Smiths Excellence (the company’s continuous improvement capabilities), legal and communications, ensuring the office plays a central role in enabling the broader growth strategy of Smiths.
The West Midlands Growth Company (WMGC) – the region’s official destination promotion agency – supported the investment by providing Smiths with specialist insights to inform their decision around expanding into Birmingham. WMGC also provided Smiths with valuable introductions to key local stakeholders and support services and provided PR consultancy to help the business raise its profile in the West Midlands marketplace.
The opening of our Birmingham office is a natural step forward for Smiths, giving us access to world-class talent, a thriving business community and a central location with direct links to other major UK cities, including our London HQ. We see significant opportunities for growth, talent development, and regional rebalancing.
– Roland Carter, Chief Executive Officer of Smiths

Attracting high-growth, international businesses like Smiths to Birmingham and the wider West Midlands is exactly what last month’s Regional Investment Summit was all about. Its decision to place our city at the centre of its UK growth strategy is testament to Birmingham’s unbeatable connectivity, world-class STEM talent and collaborative business ecosystem. We really do offer businesses the full package and I wish Smiths every success as they progress their growth journey here.
