PM Connect Case Study

Now processing over two million payments per month globally – with a presence in Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific territories alongside the UK and Europe – the Birmingham-headquartered tech firm employs 52 staff members.

Recently doubling office size to accommodate a headcount increase of 48% in the past year alone, the business attracts ambitious tech talent from across the world, seeking a portfolio of high-profile, international clients.
Tech-led success
PM Connect creates solutions that allow mobile users to pay for lifestyle and sports content, tickets, video and articles through carrier billing – adding purchases directly to their phone bill. Its unique offer involves not only providing the payment method but creating, marketing and managing mobile content subscription sites.
An example of this is PM Connect’s subscription site for WWE, which provides fans with highlights packages, pre and post-match material, the latest profiles and more, all for a small charge on the consumer’s phone bill.
PM Connect’s contribution to the West Midlands’ tech ecosystem is confirmed by an influx of recent award wins – including International Trade and Export at the Birmingham Post Business Awards 2019, and International Trade at the West Midlands Business Desk Business Masters.
Why the West Midlands?
The West Midlands is the largest regional tech cluster outside of London, with over 12,425 businesses employing over 72,700 people.
FinTech, under which PM Connect’s payment function falls, forms part of the region’s rich and diverse supply chain of tech-led companies, which includes cybersecurity, gaming and software development as well as other specialisms.
PM Connect’s remit, which expands into digital marketing and content creation, sees the firm benefit from the variety of tech expertise in the region, both drawing on and attracting further talent from a range of sector specialities.
As new deals with carriers and brands drive business success – with reported sales reaching £19.3m in the year to February 2018, a 59% increase in only three years – PM Connect will be expanding the global markets in which it operates, alongside its staff base.
Group CEO and founder James Macfarlane says:
“As we continue on our ambitious growth journey, we are proud to be carving out PM Connect as a Birmingham-based global business. We plan to double the number of territories we operate in by the end of 2020 and are confident that Birmingham remains the best location for us – offering both the tech talent to support planned growth and a vibrant place to work for our dynamic, driven team.”
PM Connect has committed to sharing experiences with the wider tech community, making links with the city’s tech network Silicon Canal – winning Large Business of the Year at its inaugural Tech Awards– and becoming a partner in the first ever Birmingham Tech Week, hosting its own event to share expertise in the programming language, Golang.
