Key areas of funding and support in the UK

As a world leader in low carbon investment – with £300bn public and private investment since 2010 – the UK is primed to support innovative CleanTech businesses and drive low carbon capabilities.

Key funding includes:

£73.9 bn invested in energy transition technologies in 2023
£390m to support supply chains of offshore wind farms and carbon capture
£116m to boost green innovation
£1bn funding for Net Zero Innovation Portfolio
£1bn+ to develop the Green Industries Growth Accelerator
Solar panels and wind turbines.

We are backing our green industries with extra cash for the Green Industries Growth Accelerator – taking the total to more than £1 billion. We have long been energy pioneers in advanced manufacturing and this will allow us to carry on that great British tradition. While we have attracted £300bn in low carbon investment since 2010, this will help to unlock even more.

Empowering the Low Carbon Sector

The UK’s Low Carbon sector has seen significant growth in recent years, with the Low Carbon and Renewable Energy Economy (LCREE) turnover increasing by 28% between 2021 and 2022. This growth saw thousands of low-carbon companies being founded, resulting in a turnover of £69.4bn and the creation of over 639,000 green jobs.

The low-carbon economy is the fastest-growing economic sector in the West Midlands which is already home to over 5,100 low-carbon businesses. The West Midlands supports a thriving CleanTech ecosystem, driven by committed public sector leadership, ambitious local policy, innovation-driven businesses, a diverse local supply chain, world-ranked universities, and collaborative research and development assets.

Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre

Led by the West Midlands Combined Authority, the Energy Capital partnership has developed the concept of Energy Innovation Zones (EIZs), with the first currently nestled in the West Midlands. EIZs are designed to be replicable in other cities and towns across the UK to support the UK’s pathway to Net Zero. This will help generate ever more opportunities for low carbon companies looking to invest in the UK.

Tyseley Energy Park (TEP) is one of the UK’s first EIZs and hosts the largest green hydrogen refuelling station in the country. TEP also hosts the University of Birmingham’s Energy Innovation Centre (BEIC), an £8.5m facility that supports innovation and R&D within waste, energy, and low-carbon vehicles.

Driving a Green Automotive Industry

The UK has a rich heritage in the automotive industry. Having built some of the earliest petrol cars alongside many iconic models throughout the years, the UK helped pave the way for vehicles as we know them today. The West Midlands is home to some of the biggest automotive brands in the world, including JLR, Aston Martin, Lotus and Polestar.

With our rich history comes huge opportunities. The automotive sector is a key area of focus in the green industrial revolution and £2bn of support from the UK government for the automotive industry will be key to driving sustainable growth. This will boost R&D for zero-emission vehicles, batteries and their supply chains, building on the Advanced Propulsion Centre’s support for the sector through initiatives such as the Automotive Transformation Fund.

The UK’s position in the green industrial revolution has recently been fortified by the launch of West Midlands-based Greenpower Park. This first-of-its-kind facility will become a trailblazing centre of electrification and clean energy in the UK and will spearhead the UK’s move to a greener automotive industry. With a focus on electric vehicles, battery production and technology development, Greenpower Park will be at the centre of the West Midlands Investment Zone, with £160m in funding over ten years to support and incentivise manufacturing businesses to invest in the region.
