The West Midlands’ flourishing FinTech sector is rooted in the established network of Business, Professional and Financial companies.

It is now the biggest and most established ProfTech sector. New entrants to the sector can take advantage of the myriad innovation hubs, incubators and technology accelerators that underpin the vibrant local start-up scene.

The region is a proving ground for the acceleration and adoption of new technologies, with a £474 million-and-growing FinTech community, the largest in the UK outside of the capital, of local founders and international investors. The West Midlands is also officially recognised by the UK government in the Kalifa Review for HM Treasury as one of only three established FinTech hubs in the United Kingdom.

Companies here benefit from the region’s deep talent pool, with a large and diverse workforce available for hiring. The West Midlands’ FinTech sector now boasts over 11,000 professionals, a 51% increase in the last two years. This sector includes established financial services firms seeking to adopt transformative technologies, alongside ambitious start-ups looking to drive disruptive change.

There are more computing students (12,900+) studying in the West Midlands Combined Authority than in any other combined authority in the UK. Nine local universities produce over 70,300 graduates a year, and a further 11 universities are within a one-hour drive, boosting the graduate pipeline further.

With growth of over 179% over the last three years, FinTech start-ups and scale-ups are driving the next generation of services in the West Midlands with support from innovation hubs, incubators and technology accelerators, helping them to scale and grow at pace.

Prominent names here include CrowdProperty, Fastcheck, Delta Financial Systems, Sidetrade and WealthWizards. These companies are using a range of technologies, such as AI-powered order-to-cash platforms for cash collection and cloud-based transaction handling to drive next-generation financial services.

Next-Generation Services

Never been done is what we do in the West Midlands.

For over two centuries, the global economy has been shaped by West Midlands-borne technologies. The next generation of modern business services, green power and digital tech is being built right here.

Companies in the FinTech space can thrive in the region, working with entities like SuperTech to catapult themselves into the market and scale.

When assessing several locations for Microland’s expansion, the West Midlands was an obvious choice for us.

The area has become an epicentre for technology, with a vibrant ecosystem of major companies, access to technically skilled, digital talent and world-class infrastructure. This is essential for us in order to meet the ever-growing demands of our global customers.
