Scaling Through Social Impact: How Unity Trust Bank Expanded in the West Midlands
Introduction
Established in Birmingham in 1984 and operating in the city ever since, Unity Trust Bank is a true West Midlands institution.
Across business, financial, and professional services (BPFS), sustainability and corporate responsibility remain key drivers of growth and client retention, making ethically focused financial partners like Unity increasingly attractive.
Specialising in ethical banking, Unity is attracting customers from across the West Midlands’ growing BPFS sector and rapidly expanding its workforce to match the demand.
The Challenge
For Unity Trust Bank, its purpose-driven model has supported continued growth since its inception, balancing commercial performance with social impact. Following its transition to a fully independent bank in 2015, Unity expanded its business banking offering to include current accounts, savings, overdrafts, and loans for socially focused organisations across the UK.
But as the firm scaled from its headquarters in the West Midlands, it encountered the dual strategic challenge of future-proofing its digital infrastructure and capabilities whilst preserving the human, community-centric model that had become a key driver of its success.
Maintaining operational efficiency whilst transforming to meet the requirements of an increasingly tech-led industry required Unity to scale within a credible ecosystem that could de-risk growth through stability, sustainability, and expertise.
The Solution
Recognising the West Midlands’ diverse multi-sectoral client base and growing professional services talent pool, Unity chose to accelerate its sustainable growth within the region, leading to plans to increase the workforce at its Birmingham headquarters.
By diversifying its operations with regional expertise in future-facing technologies, Unity could advance strategic plans to upgrade its core infrastructure and integrate new digital solutions into its offering.
Not only would this strengthen the firm’s foothold within the West Midlands financial services landscape, but the investment would create a platform for long-term growth, innovation, and enhanced customer service delivery.
We are committed to having the right people with the right skills to grow sustainably, while investing in new skills and expertise that are needed in the evolved modern world. This includes digital capability, data literacy, and AI proficiency.
The Impact
Unity quickly scaled operations, taking advantage of the deep pool of professional services talent in the West Midlands to grow its team year on year. Between 2022 and 2025, the bank increased its headcount from 110 to more than 300 and has committed to hiring a further 144 to support its growth.
In 2025, Unity Trust Bank’s lending in the West Midlands grew by 49%, rising from £14.1 million to £21.1 million, a reflection of building momentum in the region’s professional and financial services ecosystem.
The West Midlands has the largest number of Business, Professional & Financial firms outside of London, offering high growth and innovative expertise.
We have a wonderful pool of talent in the area, and an ability to provide cost-effectiveness whilst taking advantage of excellent connectivity with the rest of the UK.
Guided by its ‘Double Bottom Line’ strategy, Unity’s expansion strengthened its community initiatives through strategic partnerships. For scaling firms like Unity, which has stated an ambition to double in size and impact by 2030, the West Midlands provides leaders with avenues for faster deal execution, resulting in both strategic and commercial growth advantages.

Why the West Midlands
For large financial institutions, such as Unity, the West Midlands remains a place where traditional skillsets and digital expertise are converging.
Home to more than 170,000 professional services workers, the West Midlands offers businesses access to a well-established workforce pipeline based inside one of the UK’s leading Fintech clusters.
With an ecosystem containing major firms such as PwC, Deloitte, HSBC UK and Goldman Sachs, the region is a highly credible financial services hub underpinned by a long heritage in traditional economies such as manufacturing and automotive.
This is why the West Midlands matters.
With a young, diverse, growing population skilled in emerging disciplines such as Fintech, Lawtech and AI-enabled business services, businesses in the region can adapt and respond quicker to market demands.
As modern business services evolve into a new era defined by technological transformation, the West Midlands has become a key strategic differentiator for firms planning into the next decade and beyond.
Based in Brindleyplace, Unity is proud to be part of the Birmingham and wider West Midlands business community. Over the past 42 years, we have forged strong, collaborative partnerships with a range of businesses, organisations and charities that serve the region.
