Precision Health Technologies Accelerator
The Precision Health Technologies Accelerator provides flexible Category 2 laboratory and innovation space for life sciences start-ups and SMEs.
Located at Birmingham Health Innovation Campus, the University of Birmingham’s Precision Health Technologies Accelerator (PHTA) gives companies access to the expertise, resources and infrastructure needed to translate healthcare innovations into clinical use, including phase one to three trials and real-world evaluation.
Advanced Prototyping and Manufacturing Facilities
PHTA gives life sciences and health technology companies access to specialist facilities designed to support innovation from early-stage development through to clinical translation. Its advanced prototyping and manufacturing capabilities help businesses test ideas, refine products and accelerate new healthcare technologies towards market.
Makerspace
PHTA’s 4,000 sq ft Makerspace gives healthcare technology companies access to professional equipment, engineering expertise and practical support to develop, test and refine new products.
Companies can use 3D and micro-scale printers, laser cutting, scanning, electronics and inspection equipment to create everything from early models to functional prototypes. Businesses can work independently after an induction or access tailored support with design, materials, CAD modelling and manufacturing – helping them overcome development barriers and move promising technologies closer to commercialisation.
Government-Backed Cleanrooms
A new £10.7 million biomanufacturing facility will give pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies access to advanced medicines manufacturing at PHTA. The 5,000 sq ft facility will include three commercial cleanrooms equipped to Good Manufacturing Practice standards.
Companies will be able to develop, test and manufacture advanced therapies, including cell and gene therapies, mRNA vaccines and other medicines for clinical trials. Located alongside Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and specialist research centres, the facility will support near-patient manufacturing, helping businesses accelerate development and bring new treatments closer to the patients who need them.
