Tyseley Energy Park

Tyseley Energy Park (TEP) leverages cutting-edge technology to supercharge clean energy innovation across the West Midlands, stimulating new technologies that contribute to the region’s plan to become a net zero-carbon economy by 2041.

Located in the heart of the Birmingham Green Innovation District, TEP has a clear-cut vision; transforming clean energy innovation in Birmingham and the West Midlands. The facility is not only stimulating and demonstrating new technologies, but moulding them into commercially viable energy systems that can contribute to the region’s net zero carbon targets.

TEP’s park contains the University of Birmingham’s Energy Innovation Centre (BEIS), alongside a biomass power station, hydrogen electrolyser and the National Centre for the Decarbonisation of Heat which is due to be completed in 2026.

Tyseley Energy Park supercharges sustainable innovation with its Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre, an £8.5m research facility with a focus on hydrogen and fuel cells, energy storage, magnet and battery recycling and waste-to-fuel conversion.

Partnerships with the University of Birmingham, UoB, and Birmingham City Council, allows TEP access to resources, academia, and expertise which all allow companies to develop sustainable clean energy solutions that may shape the future of transport. With university R&D expertise and a strong network backing up strong resources, any company setting up in this sector can scale and commercialise products.

TEP’s Business Incubation Hub assists climate-focused startups in developing their proposition and entering the market. It is also a key facilitator of the Climate Innovation Platform, an incubation programme designed by UoB and the Energy Systems Catapult.

Tyseley Energy Park tackles the challenges of clean energy on multiple fronts, from hydrogen-fuelled vehicles to energy from waste and other renewable sources. It’s a great demonstration of what can be achieved through effective partnership between industry and academia.
