Insurance

Birmingham skyline at night.

The West Midlands is one of the largest insurance clusters in the UK.

The region’s insurance sector is coloured by an agglomeration of operation centres for global insurers, and the headquarters of national insurers alike.

The strength of the West Midlands’ insurance cluster, supported by an equally strong, diverse talent pool, continues to attract further international investment.

Recent insurance investments include Beazley Insurance Group, which have established a 150-employee operational base in Birmingham, and Evari Insure, an Australian Insure-tech company that chose Birmingham as the perfect place for their UK headquarters and primary digital development centre.

A large insurance talent pool

More than 39,000 people work for companies engaged in Insurance and Financial activities in the West Midlands – more than in any other Combined Authority, excluding London. In Birmingham city centre alone, over 10,000 people work in insurance.

The region has a huge number of people skilled across all aspects of the insurance industry, alongside a workforce of over 333,000 in the wider BPFS sector. Any insurer setting down roots in the region will be able to easily build a strong, talented team of people who don’t only strive for success but achieve it.

And an array of recognisable names

Some of the region’s home-grown insurance companies remain amongst its largest employers; Wesleyan Assurance Society and NFU mutual, both having built their bases of operation right here, employ over 2,500 staff combined.

The city-region is also home to operational bases for major national and global insurers, with firms including Axa, Avia and Phoenix Life Group having relocated to the area to pull from the region’s diverse talent pool and potential opportunities for success.
