What if an electric motorcycle could charge from any plug socket?
It’s the question that nearly all EV bike manufacturers weren’t asking.
Typically, manufacturers were approaching electric motorcycles in the same vein as traditional petrol motorcycles and assuming the answer to greater adoption was “more”. More power. More range. More battery. The answer in turn was simple; build a bigger battery.
More range requires battery capacity.
More battery meant more weight.
More weight. More cost. Longer charging. And a bike that became harder to live with.
For urban riders, that meant heavier bikes, longer charging times and more uncertainty around where to charge.
So why would anyone switch?
In Coventry, West Midlands, EV motorbike manufacturer Maeving approached the problem from a different angle and recognised that the biggest challenge to EV motorbike adoption wasn’t simply range, speed or power – but convenience and solving the problem of charge anxiety during the ride.
Maeving’s answer was to reimagine the charging experience itself.
What if a standard plug was enough?
Rather than adding more battery, Maeving reimagined how the battery could work: removable, portable and chargeable from a 13 amp socket – making every standard plug socket a charging opportunity.
Suddenly a home, a workplace, a flat, a coffee shop – anywhere with a standard domestic socket became an opportunity to charge.
Most people would have thought the answer to poor charging infrastructure was simply to add more batteries, but we thought it was to turn every single plug socket into a charging opportunity.
By turning the most ordinary socket into a charging point, Maeving made unconventional charging opportunities entirely conventional. So, for the riders, the benefit is simple: electric motorcycling becomes easier to live with. The charging experience is no longer built around finding infrastructure. It is built and adapted around real day-to-day urban life.
Instead of thinking, how could we get more range out of an electric motorcycle battery? We thought, how can we make it as easy to charge an electric motorcycle as a laptop or an iPhone?
We’re Britain’s first electric motorcycle manufacturer and we have championed motorcycles that use removable battery technology so that you can do a week’s worth of riding and then take your battery out and charge it anywhere.
Built in Coventry
Coventry is known for making things move. Across the wider West Midlands, more than a century of vehicle design, engineering and manufacturing has created the talent and know-how Maeving needed to build differently. So, it’s fitting that Maeving’s idea saw its rise here.
The reason Maeving relocated to the West Midlands is because this is where all automotive R&D is done. This is where you’re going to find knowledge in terms of engineering, in terms of supply chain management and production.
In the West Midlands, Maeving has built a business that connects the region’s engineering, manufacturing and mobility heritage with the needs of modern urban transport. Now it is applying that same heritage to EV adoption’s biggest barriers: charging.
Maeving’s decision to be based in the West Midlands came from a desire to be close to the region’s automotive R&D, engineering talent and manufacturing know-how.
The talent behind the breakthrough
Regional backing helped Maeving grow, but the clearest West Midlands advantage was the talent: people with the engineering, production, supply chain and manufacturing knowledge needed to turn the idea into a road-ready product.
The reason that talent exists is because people have been designing and building vehicles here for over a century.
Coventry has given us the team that has designed the world’s best electric motorcycle two years in a row.
From a better question to a road-ready product
For investors, that matters because it shows the region can support future mobility companies with the talent, R&D, manufacturing knowledge and practical support needed to build products with commercial potential.
The West Midlands helped reimagine electric motorcycling from Coventry — showing the region as a place where next-generation engineering, design and mobility come together to shape products that work in the real world.
Maeving could have followed the obvious route and added more battery. Instead, it asked a better question: what if every plug socket was a charging point?
That is the Faster Horse idea in action; not improving the old model for the sake of it, but stepping back, reimagining the problem and building a better answer from the West Midlands.
It starts here.
Our story proves that the UK can still be positioned globally as a center of excellence when it comes to automotive design and manufacturing R&D and the fact that pretty much all of that is based in the in the West Midlands is very telling.
